Sashiko workshop

Sashiko workshop with Yuko Wakaoka

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique known for its geometric patterns and historical roots, particularly in regions like Tsugaru and Nanbu in Aomori Prefecture, and Shonai in Yamagata Prefecture. Originating during the Edo period (1615–1868), Sashiko began as a practical method for reinforcing and mending work clothes, primarily among farmers and fishermen. Due to the scarcity and expense of textiles like cotton and silk, the common people used indigo-dyed linen, creating sturdy garments that could be passed down through generations. Over time, this functional stitching evolved into decorative art, featuring over 100 traditional patterns, including motifs like hemp leaves, fish scales, and bamboo. Today, Sashiko is recognized as a significant aspect of Japanese craft.

In this workshop, you’ll select a pattern from a variety of prepared designs, transfer it onto fabric, and use Sashiko techniques to embroider it. This session focuses on making a coaster with Sashiko embroidery.
